Orton-Gillingham is a structured literacy approach that emphasizes teaching language in a direct, explicit and sequential manner.  All elements required to build literacy skills are addressed, including phonological awareness, phonics and sound/symbol relationships, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.  Multisensory lessons ensure that the visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile learning pathways are all activated. 

The focus of ongoing lessons is initially determined by the Diagnostic Lesson, and then continuously adapted within the weekly lessons to address the unique needs of a particular student.  This prescriptive approach allows students to progress through all aspects of literacy at their own pace.  Lessons are strategically planned to review and teach new concepts in a way that ensures student engagement and interest.  Students may find lessons challenging, but not discouraging; having fun and building confidence are important aspects of this work.

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach was developed in the 1930s by applying insights from pioneering research, observation, and educator practices to best support struggling readers.  Research remains a vital component of OG, as the practices of Certified OG Practitioners are continuously informed and shaped by the most current knowledge pertaining to the science of reading.
