I clearly recall my Mom explaining my love of books to the kindergarten teacher on the first day of school.  I was indeed delighted to find the reading nook that day, and that joy for literature has not waned. When I gave birth to my first of two children in 2010, that passion for not only literature, but literacy was sparked further.  Our home life was anchored around reading, storytelling, and trips to the library.  When we became a home learning family while my youngest was in grade one, I looked for a reading program that supported all kinds of learners, including those who struggled with reading.  This is where I first heard about Orton-Gillingham, and I used a program based on OG methods with both of my children.

Before pursuing OG certification, I received a Bachelor's degree from Simon Fraser University in psychology with an extended minor in English.  After graduating with my BA, I spent time teaching English in Japan, before moving to LA to study prosthetic makeup.  For the next 12 years I worked in the Vancouver film industry and attended art school for ceramics in both Nelson, BC and Denmark.  In 2021 I founded a Forest School, Roots to Sky, for home learners, and I am fortunate to still occasionally facilitate, utilizing my lead designation as a certified Forest and Nature School practitioner from the Child and Nature Alliance of Canada. Now that both of my children are in the public school system, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support families with struggling readers, writers and spellers.  My greatest desire with this work is to give students the tools to find their own joy in literature, and to not be denied the pleasure of words, whether read or written.
