The Diagnostic Lesson is a necessary and invaluable starting point for our journey. The Diagnostic Lesson illuminates the areas that are mastered and those that require explicit instruction or review. Please allow 75 minutes for this initial lesson, and a week for the translation to be completed.

After a thorough Diagnostic Lesson, the OG Structured Literacy Lessons provide the specialized framework for targeted and personalized literacy intervention. The lesson divides time equally between review and new work. To be effective, these lessons must be booked a minimum of twice per week.

The Learning Port’s flotilla is an add-on for students already receiving OG lessons. In this 30 minute hosted online session, students check in briefly and share what they are reading with fellow students; then we all mute for 20 minutes of silent reading. This is great for parents who would like a little extra support getting their child to begin their daily reading.

Following an initial Diagnostic Lesson, we offer one-on-one Certified Orton-Gillingham intervention lessons for reading and writing challenges. Regardless of age, lessons are tailored to support each student individually. Lessons are available in person in Nelson, BC or online anywhere in the world. We also offer The Learning Port Flotilla, a virtual silent book club, available to students receiving OG lessons.

Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact form or schedule a call. If we establish that you’d like to move ahead, you will be asked to fill out a new student intake form a week before the Diagnostic Lesson. It takes up to a week to translate the findings from the Diagnostic Lesson before we book minimum twice-weekly sessions.

As a Certified Orton-Gillingham Practitioner, I have fulfilled the highest standards of study set by OG Canada. My university degree prerequisite, rigorous coursework and extensive supervised practicum have prepared me to deliver exceptional intervention to struggling readers and writers. A current criminal record check confirms my approval to work with both vulnerable persons and adults. At The Learning Port, we work with all students kindly and respectfully, aiming to eventually eliminate the need for OG support.
